SYNOPSIS

Fuuko (or Fuu-chan for friends) is a lively girl starting her first year of highschool. Her life is turned upside down by the arrival of her new neighbors: the bishōnen Shinpo cousins, Daiya and Ichi.

Fuuko initially falls for the playboy Daiya. Unfortunately, her first love is an unrequited love. Daiya claims he does not know what 'being in love' feels like. Suffering from her first heartbreak, she receives unexpected support from Ichi. Although he seems cold, Ichi actually is in love with Fuuko. The two spend more and more time together, and Fuuko discovers she has feelings for Ichi too. Only 'official' confessions away from being a couple, a woman from Ichi's past shows up. Iori-san used to work for the Shinpo family company. Back then, Ichi had fallen in love with her (even though she had a boyfriend, and was some years older than him). His infatuation was big enough to worry his parents, who had her fired. Now that she's back in his life, Ichi's feelings turn to her again. Not even his budding relationship with Fuuko can lessen his need to be with Iori. Fuuko can't deal with this and they part ways. Fuuko is heartbroken again, but this time the pain runs much deeper. Her love for Ichi was more serious than her former crush on Daiya. Ironically, it's Daiya who supports her through these hard times. Ichi spends his free time with Iori, and Daiya tries his hardest to distract Fuuko. Slowly, Daiya is beginning to understand 'what it is to be in love', as he is falling in love with Fuuko. But she can't return his feelings, she is not over Ichi yet. At New Year, Daiya asks Fuuko if she wants to go out with him. Taking a fresh start, Fuuko accepts. Meanwhile, Ichi says goodbye to Iori, as he finally understands she only sees him as a little brother, while the one she really loves is her boyfriend. Fuuko and Daiya are getting along fairly well as a couple although sometimes Fuuko thinks of Ichi, remembering her lost love for him.

Then at the end of Volume 14, Fuuko is speaking with Ichi in the classroom when she falls and they accidentally kiss. Although the only person who saw was Fuuko's friend, Fuuko is extremely worried about Daiya finding out as she can't work up the courage to tell him honestly. She goes to see Ichi and begs him not to tell Daiya that it happened. Ichi agrees, but the cousins have a misunderstanding which leads Daiya to realize that something happened between Ichi and Fuuko. He finally confronts Fuuko about it and asks her why she didn't tell him from the beginning. Afterwards, they have a fight and don't talk to each other. The next night Fuuko comes out of her window and sees Ichi. They start a conversation, but as they were talking, Daiya sees the two of them. He hides behind a car and thinks that Fuuko still has feelings for Ichi. Daiya, the next day, asks Ichi about any romantic feelings between Ichi and Fuuko, which causes a fight between the two cousins. Later, while Daiya is at work he is hit by a truck and is rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile Fuuko is making a knitted cap for Daiya.

Although at the point Fuuko doesn't find out about the accident, she soon does and makes her way to the hospital with the knitted cap. Daiya is confirmed to be fine, but gets angry at Fuuko accusing her that she still has feelings for Ichi. Fuuko throws the knitted cap at him and claims that she doesn't know what her feelings are at this point but when she was knitting that cap all she thought about was Daiya.

The manga continues with the three friends continuing to be friends and getting along once again. At this point of the manga it leaves of with the secretary of student council seen to be copying Fuuko previous day's hairstyle. Guessed to be because of jealousy of Fuuko's friendliness of the two boys. The manga has recently begun to continue the plot from this point onwards.

Episode 2 synopsis/recap/summary:

So we go back a little bit and hear Xiao Feng’s confession to her two friends about liking Da Ye. Her friends are happy for her and Xiao Feng is happy to get her real feelings off of her chest, but warns her friends that as of now, it is only a one-sided love. Her friends don’t help her spirits by saying that Da Ye is good to all girls, so it is hard to tell if he really likes Xiao Feng or not. Despite this, Xiao Feng still feels happy and light that she has finally (eyeroll since it is only after one episode) faced her true feelings for Da Ye. She happily plays with the children who comment on the change of Xiao Feng’s playing skills. Xiao Feng says she received a special boost from the power of love (omo, how corny). Yi Cheng comes at this moment and tells Xiao Feng not to teach the kids any weird things like that. Xiao Feng defends herself, her love, and the children. She tells Yi Cheng that she will not give up on Da Ye and will keep pursuing him. She also tells him that she isn’t afraid because why bother to date at all if you’re afraid. These words really strike a cord with Yi Cheng who watches as Xiao Feng walks away with the children to play elsewhere. He watches her with a smile, as if her words truly impressed him. Xiao Feng happens to glance back and catches the briefest glimpse of his smile. Ah, Aaron’s smile makes up for his always in place poker expression.

Back at his apartment, Yi Cheng flashes back to his girlfriend (again it isn’t a clear memory), but then he remembers Xiao Fengs happy and brave declarations about love, not giving up, and not being afraid. Yi Cheng smiles at this memory, but then calls Xiao Feng an idiot. Why? He has just a little bit more experience about the painfulness of love and how hard it can be to hold on and be brave. Not that we necessarily know that yet. It probably doesn’t help that I basically know what’s coming as I have read most of the scanlated manga series.

The next day Xiao Feng sets about trying to prettify herself, which is hardly successful. I mean, yes she does where makeup, but her clothes are pretty much the same as she always wears and her hair clips are kind of ugly and really childish. This is more expected on a high school level first love, but whatever. Xiao Feng hears the upstairs door slam and she hurries and rushes out of the house so that she can appear to run into Da Ye by accident. Da Ye says he has noticed something different, but can’t quite put his finger on it. Xiao Feng is all excited thinking he noticed her extra effort and makeup and waits expectantly, but up walks Yi Cheng who then says that somehow Xiao Feng has gotten fatter. This cuts through Xiao Feng’s daydreaming and she actually leaves Da Ye to chase after Yi Cheng to demand to know how she is heavier.

The three walk to school together which seems surprising even though Xiao Feng had it all planned so she could walk to school with her beloved Da Ye. Da Ye asks about joining a club and Xiao Feng states that she never though about it before, but a club would mean she wouldn’t get to play with the neighborhood children like she loves to do. Da Ye is then distracted by girls in tennis uniforms and says it wouldn’t be bad to join the tennis club. Xiao Feng is annoyed to think he would only join because of the short skirts. Da Ye then mentions that the swim club wouldn’t be bad either. A girl then comes up to the trio and asks to talk to Da Ye. Yi Cheng excuses himself as yet another girl is calling Da Ye out. He goes to leave and tells Xiao Feng to follow. Xiao Feng reluctantly goes to follow, but Da Ye grabs and hugs her and tells the other girl that the mood is just right, so can she leave them alone. This shocks Xiao Feng and she can’t believe he could be so cold to a girl. The girl goes away brokenhearted and Xiao Feng finally comes to her senses when she realizes how fast her heart is pounding and she pushes Da Ye away and scolds him for treating a girl like that before walking off.

Later in computer class, her two friends call her over, disrupting her musings on Da Ye’s strange behavior. The two have found a picture that has Da Ye and Xiao Feng together in the background. This excites Xiao Feng who really wants to have a picture and the trio conspire to save and print it later. Meanwhile, Da Ye runs into upperclassman Teng Qiu Ying (played by Cynthia Wang – not to be confused with actress/singer Cyndi Wang) who embarrassed him in the first episode when he accidentally showed up in the wrong class. Qiu Ying calls out to Da Ye who is surprised that she knows his name. He is embarrassed when Qiu Ying says it is because he told the entire class. Da Ye then thanks her for her help and she invites him to join the tennis club as she knows he used to be in one at his old school. Da Ye doesn’t even think twice about it and decides to sign up for the club. Having a pretty girl in a tennis uniform ask him probably helped.

Xiao Feng is in the library looking for books to write her report when she runs into Yi Cheng. He asks if she managed to find what she was looking for and she says that she hasn’t. Yi Cheng calls her an idiot yet again, but asks for her list and starts looking for her books. She asks if he likes to read and he says yes. Xiao Feng doesn’t really like to as she finds it boring. Yi Cheng then launches into how reading can transport you to different places and the like. Xiao Feng then compares the learning and adventures in books with that in manga so she can kind of understand what he is getting at. It’s not quite the same thing, but its a start. Xiao Feng then says how she admires the courage it takes for Yi Cheng to go against his family’s wishes and study human services versus business (she heard from Da Ye that Yi Cheng has always been smart and gotten the best grades – his family also hopes he can take over the business). Yi Cheng explains that he must uphold to his own principles despite what his family wants. He also says that in studying human services, he can learn about business management as well, so his options are technically open and he isn’t necessarily going wholeheartedly against the wishes of the family. He then flashes to a scene where he is being bawled out by his grandfather for not choosing the path that he was supposed to. You can tell that Xiao Feng’s praise of his choice despite its hardships in order to be true to himself touches him. While Xiao Feng’s eyes are elsewhere, he smiles at her again. She then turns to him and says that his expression while he was telling her all of that stuff was really quite handsome. Yi Cheng says that is disgusting, but that is to cover for the fact that hearing those words made him happy.

Yi Cheng sits down on a stool and says that Xiao Feng has it to. When she asks what, Yi Cheng explains that she has an affinity with children and has a new hairstyle everyday (those hairstyles do look better in manga than on actual people). Xiao Feng is touched that Yi Cheng has notices so much about her and she teases him for secretly watching. Yi Cheng quickly denies this. He tells her that in spite of himself, she always seems to enter his field of vision even though she is an eyesore that he doesn’t want to see at all. Got to love how he insults her to cover for his growing fondness and attraction. This annoys Xiao Feng. She goes back to looking (rather disinterestedly) for the books she needs when Yi Cheng stands up and flops the books he’s holding on to her head. He tells her they are the ones she needs before leaving. He says one thing and yet is secretly nice.

On the way home, Xiao Feng goes by the tennis courts and a ball comes rolling out. Da Ye runs after it and tells Xiao Feng that he joined the tennis club in the end because of a pretty senior who asked him to. He then runs back while Xiao Feng watches on as he is treated like a king on the court. Then in walks Qui Ying and Xiao Feng is hit by just how lacking she is compared to the older girl. You do have to love in these dramas and mangas how the main character always seems to have an inferiority complex which then makes them even less likely to confess.

That night, Xiao Feng’s sister is in big trouble with work. The deadline for her manhua was moved up and she doesn’t have enough time to finish herself. Xiao Feng agrees to help, but says it is too much work for just the two of them, thus they enlist the help of Da Ye and Yi Cheng. Da Ye is excited to help out while Yi Cheng complains about helping and yet sets out diligently to his task. We have Xiao Feng’s sister in the background acting out the scenes she is drawing which adds a lot of comedic relief. Da Ye almost rips the drawing by erasing the wrong way. Xiao Feng unconsciously goes behind him and takes his hand and shows him how to do it. A jealous Yi Cheng and curious sister watch on until Yi Cheng interrupts the two by asking if they were acting out a scene from girl’s comic. Xiao Feng quickly jumps back. They set to work again in a friendly atmosphere and pull an allnighter to get the job done.

In the morning, they pages are complete and Yi Cheng leaves while Da Ye stays as he is out cold sleeping. Xiao Feng happily covers him with a blanket and goes to touch his face when his eyes pop open and he grabs her hand. Xiao Feng is shocked, but Da Ye says the sailor suit is better and goes back to sleep, amusing Xiao Feng who then has a dream where Da Ye is in a high school uniform and she is in a sailor uniform and the meet and kiss. Her mom interrupts the dream asking about school. Xiao Feng assures her there is no class and when she thinks her mom has left, she takes a pillow and cuddles it laughing and smiling. Her mom looks at this wondering just what on earth is wrong with her daughter. Da Ye is gone by the time Xiao Feng goes downstairs for breakfast. Again her mother watches her in worry as she is smiling and laughing to herself while eating breakfast. Xiao Feng’s sister explains it is springtime. Understanding dawns on Mrs. Hu and she grabs a pillow and hugs it like her daughter earlier. I guess you can tell who Xiao Feng takes after.

During class, Xiao Feng spends her time staring at Da Ye and smiling instead of paying attention. After class, her two friends scold her as midterms are approaching and she is doing nothing. They then give her notes and tell her to copy them while they go to the bookstore. Xiao Feng wants to go with them, but the tell her to stay and copy instead. Xiao Feng diligently starts copying, but then decides to go over to the other side of the building to visit Da Ye’s classroom since most people have already left for the day. She goes to his desk, caresses it and sits in his seat and lays her head on his desk. I admit that even in the manga I found that slightly disturbing. She then heads back to the classroom to finish the notes when she sees Yi Cheng. She asks why he is there and he replies that he forgot something. Yi Cheng then says that her notes have a lot of mistakes. Xiao Feng says that isn’t possible as she was copying them from someone else. Yi Cheng then goes and points out all of her mistakes and she laughs and says that she managed to copy them wrong. He then calls her an idiot again before asking her what she was up to. Xiao Feng says she was going to the bathroom and he asks why on the other side. Xiao Feng says its because those bathrooms are cleaner. Yi Cheng then says he will have to tell Da Ye that she used his desk as a bathroom. This surprises, embarrasses and annoys Xiao Feng, but makes Xi Cheng smile. Xiao Feng then says that he should smile more often as it makes him look friendly and more approachable. She then says he looks like Da Ye when he smiles. Totally untrue. Aaron Yan looks even better than Calvin Chen when he smiles. Then the wind picks up and blows the curtains at them. This startles Xiao Feng who slips and falls and Yi Cheng catches her, bringing their faces pretty close. Just when you think that Yi Cheng just might kiss her, he throws back the curtains and goes to leave. There are three classmates who apologize for interrupting and just leave. They got the wrong idea, but Yi Cheng says nothing and just takes his backpack and goes.

The next day the whole school is abuzz with the news that she and Da Ye were making out in the classroom. Poor Xiao Feng is horrified of the rumor spreading so fast and is even more horrified when Da Ye comes by and says that it is just kissing so what is the big deal. Xiao Feng runs after him and grabs his arm, pulling him after her. She adamantly denies anything actually happening and almost confesses her feelings for Da Ye. Da Ye understands finally that nothing happened, but cannot understand why Xiao Feng is so agitated. Kissing is just kissing. Da Ye explains that it is like fries and ketchup and other such idiotic expressions that Xiao Feng doesn’t really understand. Xiao Feng then says that you shouldn’t kiss unless you were seriously dating. Da Ye asks what that is and Ziao Feng talks about mutual love and respect and interests, etc. Da Ye listens and says that he can never really date anyone. He then said he rejected that girl a while ago because she seriously liked him. Da Ye neither liked nor disliked her and she interpreted that as absolute like, which wasn’t right. Da Ye has never truly liked a girl like that at all. This discourages poor Xiao Feng who hadn’t even worked up the courage to confess yet.

She goes back to the classroom where her two friends demand to know where she went. Xiao Feng says nowhere and goes up to Yi Cheng’s desk and knocks. She then calls for everyone’s attention and announces that it was all a misunderstanding and that she did not make out with Yi Cheng. He says nothing and the rest of the class is disbelieving, but her friends try to back her up to no avail, so they plead with Yi Cheng to say it is true as well. He remains silent, but keeps looking at Xiao Feng. After school, Yi Cheng approaches her and asks if anything is wrong. Xiao Feng doesn’t want to say, but he says he will treat her to food and she can tell him. They get takeout and go to a park where she tells him what happened with Da Ye. Yi Cheng pushes her down the slide, making her yell at him, but he calls down to her and says that she shouldn’t give up and should get Da Ye to change his mind. Xiao Feng is comforted by his support. She doesn’t know if she can change his mind, but she will try. He offers her fries, but she refuses as she says she can’t eat them as Da Ye compared them to kissing. LOL. Walking home, Yi Cheng says that they are actually a lot a like. Xiao Feng asks how and in his head Yi Cheng says its because they have experienced the same emotions, but he doesn’t tell her that. He stops and then says they are not alike. Why? Xiao Feng is braver than he is. So something like that must have happened with the girl who gave him the mug.

The next day Xiao Feng purposely stays after school and visits Da Ye at the tennis club. He is surprised to see her and she quickly lies about having class. Da Ye points out that Yi Cheng has already left and Xiao Feng says that it is for another class. Da Ye then asks her to go and rent movies with him to watch. Xiao Feng quickly agrees even though it was the Hu “family” night. Later she quickly stuffs her purse full of snacks and then lies about going up to write a report with Da Ye. It would have been more convincing if she had says Yi Cheng. Her family doesn’t question this right away and notice the lip gloss which is really shiny. They all think she had oily fried chicken hidden in her room. She leaves and goes up to the apartment where Da Ye asks her to wipe the oil off of her mouth (LMAO). She does and learns that they are all alone as Yi Cheng has a part time job. This gets her all worked up. She applies a different tube of lip gloss and then her phone rings. Not wanting Da Ye to catch her in the act, she quickly shuts the lights off. Da Ye then turns them on and tells her she has a booger. She goes and washes her face and the two sit down to watch the movie. But, needless to say, Xiao Feng enjoys watching Da Ye more. He then leans around her and she asks what he’s doing. Da Ye replies that he was reaching for a kleenex. He then comments that she has lip gloss on and Xiao Feng asks if he wants to taste it. Da Ye leans in to her and she recalls what Da Ye said about kissing and then she remembers her own adamant beliefs she threw at him earlier. His phone rings and she immediately tells him to answer it. Da Ye laughs at her expression saying he wasn’t really going to kiss her and pulls out his phone. He missed the call and decides that they should go to Yi Cheng’s job to eat some Japanese okonomiyaki.

They head over and Yi Cheng is less than thrilled to see the two together. Da Ye and Xiao Feng scold him for behaving that way to customers. Yi Cheng says they aren’t and in walks his boss. Noticing the expressions on the three, she asks if they are in a love triangle. The trio is shocked and deny this. They are even more surprised when the boss thinks that Xiao Feng is Yi Cheng’s girlfriend and that she was secretly seeing Da Ye, too. Omo. In a way, it will be true later. While they are flipping the okonomiyaki, Xiao Feng accidentally flips hers on the edge of the table and knocks over her glass of water causing a stream of steam to shoot up. Yi Cheng goes to help her, but Da Ye immediately holds her and protects her face with his hand. Yi Cheng then comes over and calls her an idiot, but asks if she is okay. Xiao Feng is, but she is sorry that Da Ye hurt his hand. Da Ye says he is fine and the two finish their meal and leave. Xiao Feng apologizes again and asks after his hand. Da Ye says it is nothing and he is happy to have gotten hurt to protect a girl. He then notices that it looks like their shadows are holding hands. He then does a bunch of different shadow plays while Xiao Feng watches on and decides that she wants to be part of his enjoyable college life.

Meaning? Xiao Feng joins the tennis club hoping to be even closer to Da Ye. Instead of being taught tennis by him, as a newbie, she has to collect all the balls. Meanwhile, Qiu Ying is being praised for her name and Da Ye says it really suits her. He goes to leave and tells Xiao Feng that he has to meet someone so they can’t go home together but they will on other days. This immediately interests the other girls who ask after their relationship. Xiao Feng says that they are just neighbors and the other girls start asking if they can visit Xiao Feng just to get to Da Ye. Qiu Ying decides to play nice to Xiao Feng as she is interested in Da Ye as well and gives her racket to Xiao Feng to use. A little too obvious if you ask me, but Xiao Feng doesn’t necessarily detect the hidden meaning behind Qiu Yun’s actions.

Yi Cheng is walking home alone when Xiao Feng comes happily up and covers his eyes asking him to guess who. Yi Cheng removes her hands and asks if she joined the tennis club. She asks how he knows and he looks at the racket she is carrying. Can we say duh? Xiao Feng says it is harder than she thought so she doesn’t know if she can keep it up. Yi Cheng points out that since she joined for love and not for interest, then she probably won’t last long at all. Xiao Feng then hits him with her new racket and walks off while Yi Cheng again smiles at her back. The two continue walking together when Xiao Feng notices the puppy she saved earlier. She goes up and pets it while Yi Cheng keeps a safe distance. Xiao Feng is delighted when she learns that Yi Cheng is afraid of dogs. She cannot believe he would be afraid of such a cute little puppy. She then says they are a lot alike and begins doing a song saying that to the tune of “London Bridge is Falling Down.” Yi Cheng asks what she is singing and Xiao Feng says she cannot believe that the distance between them really wasn’t all that great after all. Yi Cheng asks if she thought they were really different, but Xiao Feng doesn’t catch this and he won’t repeat the question. She straightens up, but knocks her elbow against the gate and almost falls over. Yi Cheng rushes over to steady her and she says that she is always so clumsy. Yi Cheng then just stares at her and she stares back, getting a little uncomfortable. She says “Ah Yi” breaking him out of his trance and he quickly lets go of her. He then offers her advice: lose weight. (Not that this scrawny girl really needs to lose any.) Xiao Feng says she has already lost weight since meeting them and Yi Cheng asks how much. I think she was going to say 5 kilos, but switched it to 500 (talk about ridiculous).

End episode.

Episode 3 synopsis/recap/summary:

Xiao Feng’s friends go to ask permission to use the tennis courts and we can see a little bit of Qiu Ying’s two-facedness coming out when she outright rejects them. But when Yi Cheng comes in and vouches for the human services department, hoping to score points, Qiu Ying agrees to let them use the court. At tennis practice, Xiao Feng finally manages to hit the ball and Da Ye comes over to congratulate her and to also tell her that now she needs to learn how to control her swing and not just smash the ball back. Da Ye notices her shoes and asks when she will buy proper tennis shoes. Xiao Feng then asks him to accompany her the next day to buy shoes since he knows more about that stuff. Da Ye agrees even though he doesn’t know much about women’s shoes and then enlists the help of Qui Ying who was passing by. This disappoints Xiao Feng a little, but nothing can dampen her happiness about going out with Da Ye.

Xiao Feng quickly enlists the help of her two best friends who tell her that what she wears is most important as the clothes give off the feeling of just what the date means to her. They then begin listing an amalgamation of different trends and styles that are currently “in.” The amazed Xiao Feng happily takes notes and you know right away that the girl isn’t going to pick one style and go around that, no she will incorporate all the different styles. Oy.

And boy do those styles look horrible together. Xiao Feng has loud patterns, a sweeping sun hat, floral print, animal print, dress, skirt, boots, weird accessories all in one outfit. Da Ye and Qiu Ying cannot believe the uniqueness of the outfit and stand there in shock for a little while before Xiao Feng notices how simply and beautifully Qui Yin is put together. She compliments this and Qiu Ying tries to return the compliment, but it is hard. The three then set off going to an exhibit first before going shoe shopping. Just as the performance is about to start, Xiao Feng goes off to the bathroom – unfortunately there are bathrooms as part of the exhibit and she wanders into one. Then the artists comes out and the show is about to begin. Qui Ying tells Da Ye that the artist blows up her pieces and Da Ye begins to worry when he notices the bathrooms in the exhibit. He then asks Qiu Ying if she thinks that Xiao Feng would go in that and Qiu Ying, knowing a little bit about Xiao Feng’s personality says that it is highly likely. Then start the major freak out with the fuse being lit and the explosions starting. Da Ye tries to get to the bathroom to save Xiao Feng, but is held back by security. Then the toilet flushes, effectively putting out the fuse and Xiao Feng emerges from the toilet as the center of everyone’s attention. Thinking that she was part of the exhibit, the crowd starts clapping.

Outside, poor Xiao Feng is horribly embarrassed. She feels that Qui Ying and Da Ye won’t want to be with her after making such a spectacle of herself. Da Ye comes back and tells her not to worry and the three then go to the shoe shop where Xiao Feng is again embarrassed. Why? The boots that she chose to wear were nearly impossible to get off. It took three employees, one to pull the boot and two to hold Xiao Feng down to get the boot off and when it comes off the three employees are sent sprawling and the shoe goes flying. This dampens Xiao Feng’s spirits even more, but Da Ye tells her to cheer up as he will make a special meal just for her. This perks Xiao Feng up and she quickly goes to put her new shoes in her apartment and change. When she goes upstairs, she sees Qui Ying touching Da Ye’s face, misinterprets and goes running out to cry in front of the building where Yi Cheng finds her.

The sobbing Xiao Feng tells Yi Cheng not to go up to his place as Da Ye and Qui Ying are there and need some private time. Yi Cheng then calls her an idiot and asks if she will give up before even trying. The two then go up to the apartment together where Da Ye says that it was all a misunderstanding, he just had tissue on his face. Da Ye, Xiao Feng, and Qiu Yun all go to prepare dinner where Xiao Feng hinders more then helps and she swears she heard Qiu Ying call her an idiot, but things she must be wrong. She is exiled to the living room where she at first thanks Yi Cheng for grabbing her arm and dragging her back and then while listening to Da Ye compliment Qiu Ying’s cooking skills and seeing Qiu Ying feed Da Ye, she changes her mind and yells at him for bringing her back, annoying Yi Cheng who tells her not to take her anger out on him.

The four then sit down to a disastrous dinner. Disastrous in that Qiu Ying takes over the lady of the house duties. Yi Cheng, who already can tell that Qiu Ying is not what she appears to be, dislikes her immediately and yells at her for acting like it was her place when it is his home. Really, he is doing that because he is upset that Xiao Feng is being hurt by Qiu Yun’s actions and perfection. Dad Ye tries to diffuse the situation, but they quartet end up eating in awkward silence.

The next day at school as Xiao Feng is complaining about feeling tense all over from last night’s dinner she witnesses Qiu Ying being confessed to. Qiu Ying classily lets the guy down and says they can be friends. The guy then happily goes off and Qiu Ying’s sweet smile disappears and she begins badmouthing the guy. Xiao Feng cannot believe her eyes and ears and leaves only to be spotted by Qiu Ying who then asks Xiao Feng to have breakfast with her. Qiu Ying then asks Xiao Feng if she likes Da Ye, shocking Xiao Feng who vehemently denies it at first. Qiu Ying then explains about her acting skills and this has Xiao Feng livid because she doesn’t like that fact that Da Ye is being lied to and misled by this girl. Qiu Ying doesn’t believe that she is doing anything wrong and even gives Xiao Feng pointers on how to catch men. Seriously. What woman gives a potential rival pointers?

On her way home, Xiao Feng is mired in thoughts about what Qiu Ying is doing to Da Ye when Da Ye offers her a ride home on his bike. Xiao Feng decides to tell him, but can’t bring herself to do it at the last minute. Instead, she decides to primp and become someone more like Qiu Ying. Not quite sure what I think about her method of dealing with the problem, but whatever. She immediately does all these new grooming things such as pinching her nose and wrapping her legs in plastic wrap (which I think is supposed to help with water retention and other stuff). The next day, she implements her new attitude, which annoys Yi Cheng at first, but then he tells her to keep it up as it is amusing watching her be so stupid. Xiao Feng was going to break her lady-like demeanor and chew him out when she notices Da Ye. She then throws her share of the handouts on top of Yi Cheng’s and races to talk to Da Ye who is already with Qiu Ying who is borrowing some CDs from him. As the two girls pass each other, Qiu Ying warns Xiao Feng not to tattle and Xiao Feng becomes glad that she did not inadvertently spill the beans earlier. She asks Da Ye what they were talking about and Da Ye immediately becomes concerned with how different Xiao Feng is acting. He then starts poking and tickling her making he smile and laugh. He then says she has a cute face and looks much better smiling. This makes Xiao Feng happy, but makes Qiu Ying (who was watching around the corner) less than pleased.

That night, Xiao Feng goes to Yi Cheng’s workplace and he asks her what she wants. She compliments how observant he is and says that he must want to know, Yi Cheng denies this and goes to walk away, but Xiao Feng says that he has to listen to her. Da Ye asks what is going on and Xiao Feng pulls out a book in which she is recording observations and the like about Da Ye (really stalkerish). She then opens a page and begins to read about how happy she was that Da Ye said her face was really cute. Poor Yi Cheng is forced to listen to her bubble over about Da Ye yet again. He yells at Xiao Feng for not being able to confess, while he can’t really seem to confess to Xiao Feng either. Yi Cheng then says it is getting late and asks if he should call Da Ye to come walk her home as it is dangerous to be out walking alone at night. Xiao Feng thanks him but says that it is not too late and that she can make it home just fine on her own. Gotta love how he will still take care of her and support her love even when he himself likes her. There are so many different types of love. We have the selfish love (often seen in dramas and what Qiu Ying is actually more representative of), innocent love (Xiao Feng who has her innocent beliefs and ideals), and the selfless love like Yi Cheng’s who doesn’t force his emotions on Xiao Feng and does his best to help her be happy even it it isn’t with him.

The next day Xiao Feng’s happy bubble is burst when she sees Da Ye giving Qiu Ying a ride to school on the back of his bike. Da Ye explains about accidentally injuring Qiu Ying while playing tennis. Xiao Feng immediately believes that Qiu Ying is being her two-faced self and actually is only pretending to be injured. Xiao Feng confronts her in the ladies’s room and Qiu Ying admits to lying and she says that as long as it brings her closer to Da Ye, then the bandage on her foot will never come off. Xiao Feng then tells her friends about what happened and they cannot believe how low Qiu Ying stooped. But the girls aren’t surprised to hear how two-faced she is as they had witnessed a bit of it themselves. They wish Xiao Feng good luck with her love as her rival is far superior in many ways. Xiao Feng is determined not to give up and hatches her own plan.

What is it? The next day Qiu Ying is shocked to see both Xiao Feng and Da Ye waiting for her. Xiao Feng lied about being concerned for Qiu Ying in hopes of coming between the two. It didn’t really work out to Xiao Feng’s advantage as she really is horrible when it comes to physical activity and she has problems keeping up with Da Ye and Qiu Ying. The day after that, it is Xiao Feng’s plan to make Da Ye his favorite breakfast. Da Ye keeps telling her about what sounds good and Xiao Feng keeps changing the order for her dad until at last Da Ye comes back to his initial decision. Xiao Feng waits outside with the sandwich only to have the bottom of the sack fall out and the sandwich hit the ground. She then runs back into the house and snatches the fried bread her dad was about to eat. Outside of Qiu Ying’s house, Xiao Feng is happy to hear that Da Ye is craving fried bread and takes it out of her bag when Qiu Ying comes out and apologizes for being late. Qiu Ying carries a 3-tier homemade bento. Da Ye immediately starts eating and complimenting Qiu Ying who is surprised when he asks for Xiao Feng’s fried bread as well. Sensing the somewhat tense atmosphere, Da Ye then asks the two girls to help him finish the abundant amount of food.

At the school, Qiu Ying thanks Da Ye for going out of his way to help her and Da Ye says it is the least he can do, but he is distracted by Xiao Feng who is having bicycle issues. Qiu Ying tries to keep his attention when a group of people walk by and talk about how the two appear to be dating. Qiu Ying says that she hopes the rumors of their dating won’t bother him and Da Ye says it won’t as it will never happen. Ouch! Talk about a slap in the face for Qiu Ying. Da Ye then abandons her to go help Xiao Feng who is struggle to put her chain back on. By Qiu Ying’s expression, you can tell she already knows she lost the battle.

In class, Xiao Feng’s two friends tell her to be brave and fight on as they will support her against Qiu Ying. Of course, the two girls turn chicken immediately when Qiu Ying shows up and calls Xiao Feng out to take her home. When the two girls get outside Xiao Feng again accuses Qiu Ying of being two-faced and Qiu Ying says that Xiao Feng is the same as she isn’t coming with Da Ye everyday just out of concern for Qiu Ying’s well-being. Da Ye then shows up and Qiu Ying asks to talk to him. Da Ya tells Xiao Feng to go ahead, but Qiu Ying insists she comes with them. In the park, Qiu Ying confesses and Da Ye immediately rejects her like he has rejected all of the others. Qiu Ying then confesses her duplicity and walks away. Xiao Feng who worries that Da Ye will do the same to her when she confesses, runs after Qiu Ying when she sees her limping. Looks like the ankle injury wasn’t a lie after all. Qiu Ying doesn’t want pity and then tells Xiao Feng that she is really clever as she can stay close to Da Ye as a good friend without ever needing to confess. Xiao Feng wants to help Qiu Ying home, but Qiu Ying keeps the last vestiges of her pride and walks away, tearful, but head held high.

That night, Xiao Feng asks her parents who confessed first and both parent asserts it was the other one, causing the two to bicker. Then Xiao Feng’s sister speaks up and says that it doesn’t matter who confesses first, all that matters is letting your true feelings be known. This seems to encourage Xiao Feng, but when she is back in her room, she keeps thinking about Da Ye’s rejection of Qiu Ying and what he said about not being able to seriously like anyone. Will it be any different when she confesses? Does she hold a little more of a place in Da Ye’s heart than Qiu Ying? She doesn’t know, but she is afraid to find out. Da Ye calls her up and invites her to the beach. Xiao Feng agrees to go as it has been awhile since she, Da Ye, and Yi Cheng hung out together. Da Ye says that it will be just the two of them.

When they get to the beach, Da Ye asks if Qiu Ying was hurt and if she cried. Xiao Feng says yes and you can tell how much that hurts Da Ye. You would think by now he would understand that it is also partly because of his own actions that girls start to come to like him. He is too nice, too good, and way too flirtatious. On the other hand, by seeing how he acts with other girls, how can any girl get serious about him? Xiao Feng realizes he is hurt, too, but he still doesn’t understand yet. What does it mean to like someone? How do you know if you really like them or if you just like them to be at your side? How do you know what love is? Da Ye borrows her shoulder for a moment and asks these heavy questions when our episode ends.

Episode 1 synopsis/recap/summary:

We open this series with the main characters as children. Hu Xiao Feng writes a letter to her future love and hides it in the apartment upstairs. We also see the cousins Xing Yi Cheng and Xing Da Ye together. Yi Cheng is hiding something as well. Da Ye complains about this, but Yi Cheng says he will only stop hiding his stuff when Da Ye stops taking it.

Fast forward to the present day and the Xing boys are told by their grandfather that he is sending them to Taipei (they are currently in Shanghai) to study and live on their own. They will have all the credit and debit cards cut off and will only receive a small stipend to cover basic necessities. I am not certain if this is just a test or if this has anything to do with the disastrous events of the prior year the grandfather alludes to. While packing, Yi Cheng (Aaron Yan of boy group Fahrenheit) looks at a mug before carefully packing it away. Da Ye (played by Calvin Chen of Fahrenheit) tries to cheer up his younger cousin by saying that they can start fresh in Taiwan and make new friends – the perfect remedy for forgetting ex-girlfriends.

It is Valentine’s Day and Xiao Feng and her two friends are depressed as they are eating in a restaurant surrounded by lovers while they only have each other. A fight breaks out between a man and his girlfriend and Xiao Feng comments on how at least they don’t have to put up with that, but her two friends would rather be fighting with a boyfriend than be in their current single state. Xiao Feng goes home only to find her older sister (a mangaka) and her mother (a professional taster) eating instant noodles as her dad (a cook & TV salesman) films a program selling cookware. Xiao Feng calls the program and tells her dad to make her mom and sister a special Valentine’s meal of egg fried rice. He agrees that he will do that when he is done and hangs up. The Hu family go to their individual rooms while the Xing cousins arrive in Taiwan.

They arrive at their lodging only to learn they do not have the keys to get in. Da Ye thought Yi Cheng had them and Yi Cheng thought Da Ye had them. While Da Ye tries to find a way to enter (making a lot of noise, causing the oldest Hu women to think there’s a burgular) Yi Cheng sees a light on by a window. He goes over to knock on it just as Mr. Hu arrives home. Xiao Feng opens the window (wearing a mask) thinking it is her father. She is startled to see Yi Cheng and screams, bringing Da Ye making her scream again which brings her father running. When her father gets to her window and demands to know who the two boys are, the cops show up.

Once things have been cleared up, the boys eat the egg friend rice Mr. Hu brought home for his eldest daughter and wife. They all apologize for the misunderstandings and Mr. Hu tells them how the landlord gave him the key for safe keeping until the boys arrived. Both Da Ye and Yi Cheng apologize for startling Xiao Feng. Da Ye then tells the Hus that they will be going to the university nearby, which is also Xiao Feng’s school. Da Ye is an economics major (ironic considering that Calvin Chen has Master’s in economics in real life) while Yi Cheng is studying human services – which happens to be Xiao Feng’s major. Xiao Feng is then tasked with showing the boys to school the next day. During the meal and conversation, Xiao Feng comes to like the animated, warm Da Ye, and the cool, distant Yi Cheng.

The next day, all the girls in the school are buzzing about the two new transfers. Hard to believe they’ve been in Taiwan only one day, but the rumors and their fans have built like crazy. Da Ye especially attracts girls. Xiao Feng tries to be friends with fellow classmate Yi Cheng, but he ignores her and cuts short all of her conversation attempts. After Yi Cheng leaves the classroom for a moment, Xiao Feng’s two friends pounce on her and begin asking questions, slightly disappointed to find out Xiao Feng’s being with the two new transfers is only coincidental. Xiao Feng looks across the way and notices that Da Ye’s classroom is the one right across from hers. Da Ye sees her and waves, thanking her for the fried rice (Taiwanese slang for making out). Xiao Feng loudly exclaims that it was egg fried rice, but students get the wrong idea, especially when Da Ye blurts out that they are living together. Not really, just in the same building. Poor Xiao Feng.

Xiao Feng and Yi Cheng have been grouped together to work on a project. They must visit an organization dealing with special needs kids (special as in either both parents or one is dead). Xiao Feng tries to be open and warm again, but Yi Cheng shuts her down again. When the time comes to interact with the children, Xiao Feng has fun playing with them while Yi Cheng just sits around looking at the reports for class. He then notices a child who is viciously stabbing the stuffed animals on the table. The child then notices the blindfolded Xiao Feng and goes to stab her with his pencil. Yi Cheng goes to intercept the child, taking his precious mug with him (why is he still carrying it?). He yells at the child, causing Xiao Feng to get angry with him. The boy starts crying and Xiao Feng demands he apologize. Yi Cheng doesn’t explain what was happening and just goes to turn away. Xiao Feng grabs his arm, sending the mug flying. It falls to the ground and shatters. Xiao Feng apologizes and goes to help, but Yi Cheng tells her to leave it while he picks up the pieces.

When their stint at the organization is over, it starts to rain. Yi Cheng asks if Xiao Feng has an umbrella. She replies no, and he hands her his backpack so he can take off his jacket. He then takes his bag back and runs off himself, leaving Xiao Feng alone, umbrellaless. This annoys Xiao Feng who thought that he was going to share his jacket with her. She makes it back to the college only to find Da Ye in the stairwell with a girl! The girl was crying and had earlier confessed to Da Ye that her boyfriend had just broken up with her. Wow. Da Ye just holds and comforts her and shoos Xiao Feng away. Needless to say, her first good impressions (after the initial horrified one) have been shattered.

When Xiao Feng gets home, Da Ye is busy in the Hu kitchen cooking a large, sumptuous meal. Yi Cheng gets upstairs and finds the place empty. He calls Da Ye about their stuff and Da Ye tells him to come down for dinner. Yi Cheng refuses, but Da Ye says he will get no supper if he doesn’t come, so come he does. The Hus are impressed with Da Ye’s cooking skills and are horrified to learn that he learned out to cook because his parents were always gone. Mrs. Hu asks if Yi Cheng can cook as well and he replies that he can only eat. Awkward. Mrs. Hu then says that is all she can do, in fact, she is a professional eater. She does taste tests and reviews. Da Ye asks for her opinion on his cooking and he gets full marks. Da Ye then says how much he enjoys eating with all the Hus (sans Mr. Hu) as he likes being with a large family.

The next day, the kids from the area find an abandoned puppy. Yi Cheng tells Xiao Feng to leave it alone as her kindness will only hurt it as she cannot keep it. She impresses Yi Cheng when she declares that she will do whatever it takes to find the puppy a home. And now we have a whole bunch of time devoted to her and Da Ye doing everything they can to find the puppy a home. Seriously? We have that much time devoted to a dog, but it is supposed to show the deepening affection Xiao Feng has for Da Ye who is warm, considerate, and thoughtful. His niceness and charm makes her think that he likes her too? Meanwhile, Yi Cheng observes the new closeness with what looks like jealousy. He also does some behind the scenes work to find the dog a home, too.

We have this big montage of scenes where Da Ye and Xiao Feng run all over town looking for a vet for the sick puppy. They even run in the pouring rain (Da Ye actually doing what Yi Cheng didn’t and holding his coat over both of them) until they find a place. Ye gads, talk about some over dramatic scenes right there. They act like new parents concerned over their newborn’s health. I am not an animal hater, but just the whole thing seemed blown out of proportion to the point of silliness. Anywho. Of course, they both get sick from that and end up missing school the next day with colds.

When Xiao Feng learns that Da Ye is sick, she goes upstairs with medicine and the porridge her dad made for her and takes care of Da Ye. After he ate and took the medicine, Xiao Feng goes to return home only to be stopped by Da Ye who doesn’t want her to go until he falls asleep. So, of course, she stays and then falls asleep herself. Yi Cheng goes home to find the apartment door cracked and Xiao Feng’s shoes outside. Instead of going in, he stays outside all afternoon until Xiao Feng wakes up. She checks the sleeping Da Ye’s temperature and then goes to leave. She is shocked when she opens the door only to have Yi Cheng fall inside. She is mortified to learn he stayed outside so they could have their “privacy.” Xiao Feng says she was only taking care of the sick Da Ye, but Yi Cheng just brushes her off. She angrily leaves only to have him call out to her and drop a pudding (parfait?) her way in thanks for taking care of his sick cousin.

And, yeah, what more to say? The dog finds a home, Xiao Feng is pretty certain that she does have feelings for Da Ye, though Yi Cheng warns her away from his cousin. Why? He knows Da Ye’s attitude towards girls, plus it looks like he’s got some of his own feelings starting for Xiao Feng as well.

Xiao Feng and Da Ye are surprised to find out that it was an internet ad that helped the puppy get a new home. Da Ye knows that it is his younger cousin’s doing and promises to cook a big dinner in celebration and thanks. Xiao Feng goes to their house to help out and goes and bugs Yi Cheng when he comes home. Yi Cheng says there is no thanks needed, he just helped the puppy, but still Da Ye wants to celebrate. Da Ye gets a call from his mom and Xiao Feng is noticeably relieved to hear it is just Da Ye’s mother. Yi Cheng watches while she intently listens to the conversation and you can tell he’s got some of his own jealousy going on.

End episode. Seriously. Most of the plot revolved around the dog and some of Yi Cheng’s flashbacks to a shadowy girlfriend and the trio’s relationships starting to get established.
