Episode 18 synopsis/summary/recap:
Jung Woo reports back to NTS that Son Hyuk isn’t present, and Joon Ho quickly suggests that he might be able to trace the origin of the web cam’s feed. A little typing here and there, but they reach a dead end. Because Son Hyuk is now offline, they can’t locate the source. Meanwhile Hye In goes to the next room and finds a whiskey bottle and a shattered glass – evidence of Son Hyuk’s brooding.

Jung Woo is impatient for Sook Kyung and her team to find something out with all the things they got from the hideout. All she can determine (since she just started her analysis) was that they definitely had another location to prep their terrorist activities. They only have two days before the nuclear reactor’s inauguration ceremony, so they need to catch Son Hyuk and Athena as quickly as possible.

Jae Hee is breaking down – slowly but surely. Her hands keep shaking from the memories of her father dying before her, the NTS takeover, the bomb scare. Joon Ho notices the symptoms as he himself endured it when he accidentally got a hostage killed before his eyes. He offers to help her get over these memories, as she had helped him hold a gun again, but Jae Hee knows her remedy. She needs to arrest Son Hyuk with her own hands.
Stand in line, girl, behind Jung Woo and Ki Soo.

Son Hyuk goes to meet another Athena commander named Philip; he’s not too pleased to see him there, and refuses to say just exactly how hard of a time he’s having to eliminate that little twat called Lee Jung Woo. He knows that the commander isn’t there to tell him good news though – and it’s because as they speak, a mutiny is occurring within Son Hyuk’s team.
Philip knew that bringing Hye In onboard would spell trouble, so he’s been waiting for this day ever since. He’s going to take over the mission in destroying the nuclear reactor. He arrests Son Hyuk as sign of victory and tells the team that anyone who wishes to follow Son Hyuk should speak up now. Everyone looks at Sean Richard.

Sean Richard to Son Hyuk: “I’m sorry.” And he goes to stand with the rest of the team. Imagine Son Hyuk and my shock! I mean really, after everything you’ve gone through, now you decide to just ditch him!?
The commander tells everyone to carry on with their work, and to have Hye In brought in. That unleashes the cat within Son Hyuk, and it takes several men to drag all 6-feet of him out of there and into a small room.

Hye In asks to accompany Jung Woo to investigate the bomb blast scene by the subway, thinking that she might be able to find a clue others missed. The location has been taped off and a mini shrine has been set up to commemorate the lost lives. A makeshift memorial wall shows pictures of the victims, and letters and flowers left by loved ones. Jung Woo didn’t want Hye In to come, for fear that the number of lives would become a burden on her mind. But Hye In says she deserves it.
Jung Woo invites her out to tea, and they go to the cafe that I swear was the same place Joon Ho had his scarring experience with the hostage. They take some time to talk about their parents, and Hye In admits all she can remember about them is during their trip to New Zealand. It was the happiest time she ever had in her life, and so she wants to go back there (once she gets out of all this spy-mess).

At the same time, a black van pulls up with Athenians and Sean Richard. They barge into the cafe, pull out their guns, and start shooting. A waitress gets caught in the crossfire and Hye In drags the girl out of harm’s way. She takes down an agent, but another one grabs the waitress as a hostage. Meanwhile Jung Woo is still struggling with the agent punching at his gut, and so they take the opportunity to take Hye In away. Despite being continually beaten, Jung Woo aims his gun at the Athenian holding the waitress, and accurately shoots his head, thus releasing the girl. He chases after the black van on foot.

Sean Richard drives the car further away and then stops. He opens the back door, aims his gun at Hye In, and says, “I’m sorry.” (He likes that line a lot, huh?) And then he shoots the other Athenian. HA! I KNEW HE COULD NEVER HURT HIS MISTRESS!
He tells Hye In to run off – Son Hyuk is in confinement and Philip is in charge. He sees Jung Woo racing towards them, so he gets back in the car and drives off.

Philip goes to see Son Hyuk, who begs him to give Hye In a chance. She wasn’t at fault for anything, having only been a loyal member to Athena. But Philip doesn’t care; the Son Hyuk with the spotless record has finally failed. If he acts carefully from this point on, he could make a comeback to Athena – but not Hye In.
Outside of the room, Philip gives orders to his second-in-command: kill Son Hyuk the moment the cargo arrives. He then meets Sean Richard, who is empty handed. He gives a good punch across Sean Richard’s face, and I go, “You better be happy that that punch didn’t leave a mark, Mister, or I’d be reachin’ across the screen and ocean to wring your neck.”

Jae Hee and Jung Woo muse over why Son Hyuk would have wanted Hye In dead after today’s attacks. They suspect that he’s become more unstable than ever, or things are changing for him within Athena. Sook Kyung then presents the team with information that Son Hyuk is about to receive a large shipment (either weaponry or equipment). They’ve already prepared for such incoming shipment by arresting all Athena members working at customs or at the ports. Though they still don’t know what the shipment is, they need to intercept it before Son Hyuk gets it.

Back at the Athena headquarters, Sean Richard requests to see Philip to show him some new intel. He is escorted to Philip, but once alone with his guard, he turns around, throws the papers in the air and punches the guy in the gut to submission. Yeah. That’s my boy. He knocks out the guard in front of Son Hyuk’s cell and gives his master a gun. Time to leave. And yes, Hye In is OK.
Sean Richard goes back to the control center alone, and gives a meaningful glance at a colleague. Philip then comes in and asks when the cargo will arrive. It’s coming any minute now, so he tells his second-in-command to off Son Hyuk. Yeah – if only Son Hyuk didn’t shoot him first.

The agents loyal to Son Hyuk all pull out their guns and aim it at Philip’s head. Philip warns Son Hyuk not to do anything stupid, lest the heads of Athena get mad. But let’s face it – Philip’s only here as a temporary obstacle for Son Hyuk’s grand plan, and so Son Hyuk shoots him down. Now what to do about the agents loyal to Philip?
Well – kill them.
His team sets sail at the dark of the night and wait for a signal from a submarine. And with that, they pull up their cargo from underwater.

With Sun Hwa on the run, Ki Soo is also in danger. A team of North Korean agents enter his empty gambling parlor, ready to arrest and kill him. Despite their stealth, Ki Soo already has a nail gun at hand, and he shoots one of them who enters his office. He uses the boy as his shield and takes on the rest of the team by himself. He even offers to let the guys go, but of course they want. Ki Soo throws down a couple, and shoots down most of them. One remaining agent corners him behind the bar, and Ki Soo grabs a knife to throw. When he gets up, the agent is already right in front of him.
A shot – and the agent is down. It turns out Chul Young has arrived with his men just in time. Chul Young wants Ki Soo to come with him – they’ll leave until everything dies down. However, Ki Soo wants none of that. He addresses Chul Young as his Hyungnim to show how serious he is, and says that he wants to go home to North Korea freely. They can only do that though if they can free themselves from the Kim Ho Gyun assassination, and get rid of Athena altogether.

NTS control center has detected the submarine’s frequency signals, and they report it to Director Kwon. They found the new Athena hideout, and it had equipment ready for twenty missiles. There was also a list of 20 buildings – all of them political or international buildings – that could be targets of the missiles. The nuclear plant is not mentioned at all, which throws them off a bit. No one is sure where the missiles have been transported, so Director Kwon orders them to release the list to the Ministry of Defense and up the security alert status.
Only Jung Woo thinks something is up. They got the information too easily, and Athena’s target was always about the nuclear reactor. But Jae Hee reasons that if Son Hyuk killed his superior (they found Philip’s body), then he might not be acting under Athena’s orders. Hence, a wide scale terrorist attack might be right up Insane Son Hyuk’s alley.

Jung Woo reviews the CCTV tapes of the missiles being transported and sees a hearse being driven out of the building. Though they have checkpoints set up, the funeral hearse manages to pass inspection. They meet up with Sean Richard further off and open the back. They pull out the coffin slowly and open it up. Son Hyuk stands up, gun in hand.
Joon Ho finds the abandoned hearse near Gyeongju, which is near the nuclear plant. Jung Woo wants a team to go after Son Hyuk, but Director Kwon can’t give him many men. Most of security has been sent to the other 20 buildings, in case they really are the targets. It’s a small team, but Jung Woo just needs to provide proof of Son Hyuk’s presence and plans to get more men.

Tae Hyun goes to the scene where the hearse is and investigates. He reports to Joon Ho and Jung Woo that there was a man fitting Son Hyuk’s description inside the coffin. There were no missile residue however, so they still don’t know what happened to the weapons.

Son Hyuk goes to the new warehouse that houses their missiles. NTS is confused by the false information he leaked, and they won’t be able to locate the trucks that (supposedly) transported the missiles.

Episode 17 synopsis/summary/recap:

The casualty count is slowly increasing with the death of Sung Chul. At the funeral wake, Jung Woo stands before Sung Chul’s picture with angry tears forming in his eyes as he reminisces his time with his mentor. He’s not the only one feeling the loss keenly: Ki Soo is getting himself drunk at the funeral place, angry and annoyed (in that bitter, depressed way) that he must now take care of the man’s kids as he promised.

Meanwhile, Hye In is haunted by the image of Sung Chul dying in the warehouse as she sits in the NTS interrogation room, once again a prisoner. She calls Director Kwon, requesting to be allowed to attend the funeral of Sung Chul (and we all know how bad she is at funerals…).

He attends the funeral with Chul Hwan to pay his respects, and then leaves with Jung Woo. They bump into Hye In, who has been given permission, albeit wearing handcuffs. Seeing how pitiful she must look, Kwon allows for the handcuffs to come off.

She places a flower before Sung Chul’s picture and bows her head in respect, letting her emotions break free from her shell. She apologizes to Sung Chul – and of course Jung Woo sees this (because all Kdrama heroes must eventually see the goodness of their girls).

Son Hyuk’s bitter too – but he deals with Hye In’s betrayal by drinking (because all Kdrama brooders must drink alcohol). He’s so angry that he manages to crush a glass in his hands (for added effect). Whoa – I wish I could do that with my bare hands.

Ki Soo returns to his office, bummed out like hell but forced to play secret agent for Chul Young – he’s going to New Zealand! Though Ki Soo wants to leave Sun Hwa alone, Chul Young wants her to be found before the North Korean agency gets to her. Apparently, North Korea is in the process of eliminating former elite agents, and so Ki Soo and Sun Hwa are at the top of their list.

Unfortunately their entire conversation is also being eavesdropped upon.

Son Hyuk phones in to NTS and wants to speak to Jung Woo. Of course, the entire office listens in via speakerphone. Son Hyuk says that he’s suffering more than Jung Woo. (And I go, “Sigh* I think I’m suffering the most from the cheesiness of this conversation.”) He ends the conversation with a threat: he will do something so magnificently disastrous in the middle of Seoul – “just wait and see.”

That spurs NTS (mainly Joon Ho) to look up all possible targets within Seoul city center. They’ve already secured cooperation with all other organizations. Kwon makes the decision (informing Jung Woo first privately) that Hye In be part of the team. She can shed a lot of light on Son Hyuk and what his plans may be, even if it means turning her back on Son Hyuk completely.

With her cell phone, Sook Kyung and her team manage to extract information about Athena’s possible target – the nuclear power plant. The plant isn’t exactly in the middle of Seoul, so the other Secretaries of the President’s cabinet are quite wary of the information. They insist on placing more security around the major targets within Seoul, and then some at the plant.

Jung Woo is point person for this mission, so he has everyone on a task – but Jae Hee. She’s still shaken by the hostage incident, even though she refuses to admit it. Tae Hyun also joins the team as “immediate backup” because he’s a “multi-talented” agent.

Creative, writers. Very creative.

So aside from being a bomb specialist, he knows special equipments. (How vague is that!?) He also specializes in the Art of Stating the Obvious – “I don’t think they can attack the nuclear plant from the outside since it’s protected by five layers…[but if they used a bomb like the one in NTS] it’d be possible if they used it inside the reactor.”

Since security has been increased, Jae Hee wonders how Athena would attack if they can’t do it from outside or get inside. Um – that’s your job isn’t it?

Thankfully, we escape to New Zealand. Ki Soo sits at an outdoor cafe, photos in hand and ready to meet So Yeon Sun Hwa. He watches her come out of a minivan (the sign of motherhood) outside a kindergarten school, alone. He approaches her cautiously, and Sun Hwa initially thinks nothing of it. But when she recognizes him, she slowly turns a grave face at Ki Soo and warns him not to come any closer.

The children come out with their parents, and Sun Hwa greets her young daughter and husband. Using the excuse of meeting the teacher, she passes by Ki Soo and slips a small piece of paper in his palm, telling him to meet her there at 10.

Cue montage of family day! Sun Hwa and her family go to a nearby park and have a picnic, getting ice cream from a truck and visiting a museum. They’re absolutely adorable! Is it weird if my favorite part about this is the daughter gets to wear basketball shorts?

Sun Hwa then puts her daughter to sleep and tells her husband to go to bed – no hanky panky, since he’s got an early day tomorrow.

She waits until he’s asleep before heading out to meet Ki Soo, but the threat is already at her door step: four masked men with silencers on their gun. As she makes her way into the kitchen, she detects something strange. Gunman 1 aims his gun behind her head, and she immediately knocks his arm, letting the bullet fly into the window instead. It’s a fierce fight, and Sun Hwa shows us the proper way to fight an intruder with kitchen supplies – specifically a pan. She gets the guy into a headlock, breaks his neck, and then punches his heart, letting him fall like a rag doll.

Woops – her husband just saw the whole thing.

Another gunman appears behind her husband. Sun Hwa grabs a kitchen knife and throws it at the guy, piercing his heart and missing her husband. She orders him to get their daughter out of here, and like a good husband, he obeys.

Another one shoots into the kitchen from outside, and when he breaks in, Sun Hwa lifts the kitchen table to knock him back out onto the patio. Using the barbecue grill (I seriously love how she’s using everyday home appliances) she slams the guy down continuously. They’re back inside the kitchen…and she pushes him far enough to grab the gun and fire four bullets into his body. Three down.

Sun Hwa begins to wonder why her husband and daughter aren’t coming down yet, so she dashes up the stairs to encounter the fourth one on the second floor. She disarms him and shoots him down as well.

She enters her child’s bedroom – her daughter and her husband are dead, with her husband’s body lying over the child as if he were trying to protect her. Sun Hwa breaks down, gasping out screams of pain and despair as the tears run down her face.

Assholes.

Meanwhile, Ki Soo is waiting for her at the appointed location, wondering why she hasn’t shown up yet. Back at her home, the phone of one of the gunmen rings and Sun Hwa picks up – it’s Chul Young. Aw great. She unmasks the killer and recognizes him as a North Korean agent. Chul Young is surprised to hear her on the other end of the phone, but she’s too pissed to care. She thinks he orchestrated this hit, and she’s so angry that they had to kill her husband and children – both of whom never knew her past. She swears, “My dead kid’s name is Park Saemi. I’m going to swear before my baby bleeding to death, I will take my revenge on you and North Korea, so please remember my daughter’s name.”

See – now why wasn’t this the plotline for Athena? Who gives a crap about another outside organization when we can have an awesome tale of revenge instead? It would also mean more Ki Soo scenes, since he’s North Korean.

Ki Soo finally drives up to Sun Hwa’s house and he immediately realizes something is wrong. He searches for Sun Hwa, but she’s nowhere to be found. He makes his way to the child’s bedroom, sees the blood, but no bodies. The entire family’s gone.

Back at NTS, Hye In proposes that they first locate the people working for Son Hyuk. One thing for sure is that once people within Palace are assigned to teams, they never switch into another team for security reasons. To locate these people, they have to go through customs and see who entered the country recently. It’s a lot of research, and Jung Woo and Hye In work tirelessly at it. Jung Woo finally takes a break at the cafe for coffee – but he ends up making a cup for her and a couple of waffles. A nice reversal since he always wanted her to bring him coffee.

They finally get a match – Oh Dae Shik, the team leader, and above him is Lee Chang – a guy who works in Shanghai. To get to Oh, they need Lee Chang’s access card and code. They send Jae Hee to seduce him, and she makes her way up to his hotel room. When he corners her (as a way of trying to get her in his bed), she twists his arm, kicks him in the chest, brings her leg around his neck to take him down, and breaks his neck. Best use of slo-mo ever.

Now she’s free to get his key card and phone. As she leaves his bedroom, she drops her bag as a bait to draw out the body guards so that she can snap their necks too.

Ki Soo calls Jin Young over to his gambling parlor to hand “something” over to Chul Young. He leaves for a second and that’s when Jin Young gets a call from one of his men – one of the gunmen sent to kill Sun Hwa. There’s no reply on the other line – because it’s really a trap set by Ki Soo. Now that he knows Jin Young masterminded the whole thing, he asks why. Jin Young knows that Chul Young had Kim Ho Gyun killed, and that he wanted to protect Sun Hwa (a “traitor”) for personal reasons. But Ki Soo’s angry that they had to resort to bloodshed and kill innocent people. North Korean agents and their families are a touchy subject.

Using Lee Chang’s access card, Hye In sends a message to Son Hyuk’s team saying that they’re sending over a small-sized cargo. “Small sized cargo” stands for people, and “large sized cargo” stands for weaponry. She gets back the coordinates of where they will meet them. Jae Hee doesn’t want Jung Woo to go, since he’s so recognizable, but Jung Woo isn’t about to let Son Hyuk slip through his fingers.

So he disguises himself and waits at the appointed time, looking very much like Clark Kent, standing outside a phone booth no less. Wow – I guess glasses and a bit of a mustache is supposed to work wonders. Everyone’s watching from afar or from NTS as the Athenian agents roll up to him. Jae Hee and Hye In follow in a car with backup right behind them.

Unsure of his identity, they start testing Jung Woo about certain people. Hye In is linked in to his ear piece so she tells him who each person is to correctly identify them. They mention Charlie Chung, but Hye In doesn’t know anything updated regarding this person. They do a quick search and tell Jung Woo that Chung is in Taiwan.

The agents drop him off at a random location. He answered incorrectly – Chung is dead. One of the agents pulls a gun on Jung Woo but Hye In manages to shoot him first through the back car window. The agents drive off, and Jae Hee tries but loses them. NTS techies help locate them and they follow all the way to a building with SRT back up.

It’s a warehouse like location, and NTS goes in on full offense, shooting down the guards. Sean Richard reports to Son Hyuk that they’ve been found out. Son Hyuk’s team packs everything up but are caught by Jung Woo and Hye In. Jung Woo shoots down all of Hye In’s former colleagues.

They can’t find Son Hyuk, and it turns out he’s in another place, watching via monitor feed Jung Woo and Hye In break into his operation cell.

Episode 12 synopsis/summary/recap:

Son Hyuk is finally arrested and taken to the NTS. When asked how she got there so quickly, she explains that she was already on her way to the hospital when she received NTS’ text. Therefore, she got there first. Her story seems legit, so they let her off the hook. For now.

With Son Hyuk on the verge of death, Kwon’s position is higher and more powerful – more so considering that they sure have some shared history on their backs. Once Son Hyuk is out of danger, it’ll be his time to be questioned not by USA’s agents, but by the NTS. After hearing this news, Jung Woo is shocked – why should they lead the investigations? Easy, that’s their only way to continue their ongoing inquiry on Athena and those pesky double agents.

In conclusion, Jung Woo will be the leader alongside Jae Hee and Joon Ho as his partners, while Kwon buys some time for them. No one else should know about this. Well, good thing you emphasized this, or else he would’ve ran to Hye In and tell her these details. Hmph.

The fact that they’re doing this without the DIS’ authorization makes some noise in Joon Ho’s head – they’ll eventually find out, and they’ll be in a difficult situation. His concerns only underline their need to be efficient and fast in their mission.

Hye In’s absence is also noticed by Joon Ho. He claims it to be weird that, since she was the one responsible for Son Hyuk’s arrest, she’s not part of the special team. Jung Woo only tells him that these were his direct orders, but looks a teensy bit conflicted. Either way, he instructs Joon Ho to do his job.

It’s clear that Jung Woo is conflicted over Hye In’s participation in the whole thing. From afar, he looks at her and remembers her words when she dumped him. Meanwhile, she’s not so focused on him as she’s on Son Hyuk’s last words before being arrested.

Son Hyuk: I was planning to cut my ties to Athena when this project was over. The headquarters agreed. They gave me their word that I would live the rest of my life as I please. But it’s no use. It’s all over for me. But as for you, you must live.

Now that her tutor-boss is biting some bitter dust, her future doesn’t seem so smooth as before.

At the Blue House, Kwon’s maneuver isn’t so well received – a potential diplomatic conflict is something they should avoid. It only takes him to mention the obstacle Athena would represent to their nuclear power exportation to make the Secretary agree (albeit doubtfully). He’s urged to be as quiet and fast as possible.

The Special Team is at full speed in order to complete their job. Jae Hee and Jung Woo spend some time at their Special Team Room, where he wonders whether she found something useful while controlling Son Hyuk. She gives some roundabouts and file information (studies, etc) – being a bright man, it’s puzzling how he went to the dark side so imprudently.

It’s the power of money that rots even the best of men, Jung Woo affirms.

Well, DUH. Are they trying to give us some IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT LIFE here?

It’s time for Jae Hee to rub some salt into Jung Woo’s wound. She’s the first person to mention Hye In’s suspicious behavior, and how she supposedly entered that shack not caring about the protocol. That would be pretty dumb of her, right? Unless–

“She was a Black Agent, they work alone”, Jung Woo explains.

OH WELL.

All of us know he’s trying to auto-convince himself of her innocence, but it should be about time for him to stand up and investigate her. At least, google her, dammit. Jae Hee rolls her eyes in disbelief and shuts up – what’s the point, right? If he’s a damn secret agent who doesn’t find the need to check someone’s past, life will eventually teach him that lesson.

Kwon, on his visit to the Blue House, runs into Director Han, who’s still ignorant on recent events regarding Son Hyuk. He’s not given as much information as he would’ve wanted to, but senses something in the air. Maybe he’s being left out of some big developments?

Meanwhile, the Special Team is finding it tricky to find anything useful. The doctor’s kidnapper was a professional camera avoider, so her face isn’t clear either.

Facing a serious dead-end, Jung Woo visits Son Hyuk. It’s a shame Jung Woo has his typical loser posture and Son Hyuk is drugged (?) or weak, because it would’ve been a great moment to give us watchers the intense eyefucking and hottie face to face we deserve.

SO. Jung Woo goes to Son Hyuk and instead of being a bit dense on the “TELL ME SOMETHING THAT’S USEFUL” part, he tells him about his mission to find that Athena agent that’s working within the NTS. Oh, sorry peeps, I forgot to say that his mission was secret.

Wait, Jung Woo forgot it too.

Is he some kind of homo sapiens with the brain of a chimpanzee? I mean, seriously, tell me how that’s smart of him. His only intention is to brag in front of a handcuffed enemy? Whatever.

The relationship with the North ain’t going well, either. The Blue House Secretary is cancelling all of their meetings, detonating a furious rage in the envoy. They feel they’re not being taken seriously, and that this is a declaration of war.

The clock’s ticking for Ki Soo too. He has to wrap up his special task sooner than soon in order to keep the Lt. General happy. Another ingredient is added when Ji Young (the special envoy who warned him of the Lt. General’s arrival in episode 11) mentions that he hasn’t forgiven him and that, if he wants his mother to be safe, he must do what he’s ordered.

It’s time for him to betray Jung Woo’s trust, then (not that he doesn’t deserve it). Alongside Mr. Chang, they go directly to the bank where that security box was, posing as NTS agents, and ask the manager to give them full access to the CCTV.

Hye In takes her phone, using a second chip, and sends cryptic messages to an agent. Everything would be fine IF Joon Ho hadn’t detected that the same chip Andy used to contact someone while on the run is now in motion. Busted.

2 plus 2, hands in blue, and we have a clear path to Hye In!! Finally!! They don’t know it yet, but I’m crossing my fingers.

The suspect is in the NIS, so Jung Woo and Jae Hee rush there aided by Joon Ho, who’s left checking the map to give the exact location. They chase the car to a parking lot, where the person who received Hye In’s text (let’s call him X) is headed (she’s on her way there, too – exciting!).

Jae Hee takes the same elevator as X, takes note of the floor he’ll go to (B4) and informs Jung Woo, who’s waiting in a second elevator. Hye In, meanwhile, takes a third elevator to B4 too.

Everyone is about to be reunited in a lovely robbers and cops fashion until Jae Hee’s reflection on a car is noticed by X! GAHHHHH!!! Hye In quickly hides, before anyone could see her while X tries to run. Jung Woo follows him, but he catches him too late – he’s taken a suicide pill.

AW-HELLS-NO!

That’s it, time out. I was genuinely excited for the possibility of Hye In being captured, only to be disappointed by Jae Hee’s lack of hiding abilities. They burst my pretty bubble, booo.

The Special Team’s plan was completely ruined – not only they lost X, Hye In is now aware of their mission and has got ridden of the chip. Apparently, she (or someone close) informs Director Han of X’s death, and he instructs her to ask for a plan B from the headquarters. He gets rid of his special chip too.

In an elaborate attempt to get the final information on the security box, Ki Soo fakes an internal audit by the NIS. He asks Sang Chul (he must have seen him in the CCTV record) to go to his mahjong place, where he is all worried and handcuffed. After a brief chat, they’re separated in order to be questioned. Sung Chul is accused of hiding slush funds in the safety box so they can find out the real contents of it. He’s reticent at first, but eventually gives in.

My heart weeps for your soul, Ki Soo.

At the NTS, per Kwon’s orders, Son Hyuk receives one nasty injection. There are two things that must be clear when talking about them: Son Hyuk is planning not to say a word, and that he deeply regrets not having killed Kwon in the past. Today, Kwon will give him the chance to set things right and confess.

Time’s running short, he’ll have to decide.

After his visit, Kwon summons Jung Woo and asks him about X. His name and affiliation are finally revealed – Han Sang Jin from the NIS – but there’s not so much more information. They both think that Son Hyuk won’t talk even under torture, but Kwon wonders why he gave up without fighting or committing suicide. He wonders and leaves it there, as a string for Jung Woo to grasp.

Tragedy keeps falling on the Special Team’s head, as a folder from Han Sang Jin that was supposed to be their great breakthrough, is protected with an auto-delete algorithm. They found only one clue: the IP address to which he sent information was the Presidential Secretariat in the Blue House. That’s really a big deal, since a lot of people work there, and all of them are potential Athena members.

Jae Hee visits Son Hyuk too (at this point, he’s like the celebrity of the NTS), and asks why he approached her. WELL, DUH. Did she think there was something there that wasn’t “I need to control you because you’re my potential enemy”? He represses a laugh and dismisses her reproaches.

Director Han is more nervous by the minute. He goes to the NTS to check if they’ve found Son Hyuk. Kwon quickly denies having caught him, but his unusual serenity and confidence are noticed by Director Han. Something’s fishy around here.

And suddenly, unexpectedly… Jung Woo starts to gather other people’s doubts over Hye In and Son Hyuk and the strange bond that might exist between them.

Let us all sing alleluia!!!

Adding to his puzzle, Joon Ho gives him an old photo he found while looking through Son Hyuk’s belongings – there’s a younger Son Hyuk with a little girl. On the back, it’s written “Yu Jin’s first birthday”. He immediately goes to Son Hyuk to ask about this Yu Jin. The latter is shocked but doesn’t utter a sound.

Therefore, their next task is to find out who this girl is. With an old photo and a name? Good luck with that.

Hye In, who hasn’t had an important role in all this but feels that there’s something developing under her ignorant nose, finally breaks into the Special Team’s room (using her magical phone that has the “NTS passwords cracker” app installed). He finds a lot of papers and the surveillance computer that transmits Son Hyuk’s state live.

Have you stopped singing alleluia? Please, resume the singing, because Jung Woo has finally had the guts to formulate a theory of his own. After being told that the photo is insufficient, he visits Son Hyuk again.

Jung Woo: That person in the photo… We both know her, right?

Me: *throws confetti*

Too bad their time is up, USA has found out where Son Hyuk is, so they’ll have to deliver their evidence wrapped up in shiny paper. Joon Ho, as always defending his country’s pride, protests – will they give up so easily? So it seems, kid. Kwon ain’t happy either, but they’ll have to let go.

One that is particularly unhappy is Hye In, whose concerned eyes don’t go unnoticed by Jung Woo. Mmm, sizzling! His newly found instinct tells him he has to double check those CCTV records from the hospital. He captures a partial image (from nose up) of the kidnapper and puts it through a face recognition software.

(Didn’t they do this before?)

Anyway, on his way to the airport, Son Hyuk is retaken by his guys, as half of the supposedly good spies were Athena boys in fact. This was bound to happen, and Son Hyuk has his lovely first killings after being captured too! He must have had withdrawal symptoms.

Bring it on.

Good news is, Andy’s back too! Yay. Now, the universe is balanced again – the good guys are following strong clues, and our baddies are back in place, contemplating the world and how to destroy it.

After reviewing all of Hye In’s past interventions within the NTS, Jung Woo is ready to face his final challenge. He waits for her, by her car and calls her name. The real one.

Jung Woo: Yu Jin.

Episode 11 synopsis/summary/recap:

Just after his meeting with Joon Ho, Jung Woo goes directly to Ki Soo for help in this tricky decoding thing. Surprised, Ki Soo affirms that the code is one used by high North Korean officials, but he’ll be able to decipher it. And that’s exactly the moment when Hye In makes her Judas move.

Ki Soo notes the bright smile in Jung Woo’s face as he talks with Hye In, and wonders if a relationship between them would be accepted within the NTS. Jung Woo shushes him, while at the same time finally getting the logic behind the code (and quite faster than Ki Soo, who bragged about being an expert LOL).

That night, our ill-fated lovers can’t sleep a wink, for different reasons: Hye In’s conscience is killing her, while Jung Woo’s excitement over the code is still on fire. Eventually, he succeeds: it consists of a routing number (for a bank and its location) and a safety deposit box (number + code). Ki Soo is like a kid who’s found the map to a secret treasure, but Jung Woo calms him down – from now on, it’s his business only.

Once again, our ditz makes us wonder how he got a job in the NTS in the first place, since he makes a mistake not even a beginner would make – he takes the code in a memory stick but leaves the computer with it at Ki Soo’s mercy. No matter how funny and lovable the guy is, he shouldn’t trust so much in other people’s good faith.

On his road to perdition, Jung Woo calls Kwon to make him know about his recent victory. He also tells Joon Ho about this, and I guess he cross-posted it as his Facebook and Twitter status “I decoded Dr. Kim’s code! WHO’S THE BOSS?!”

Finally, we get to last episode’s cliffhanger, where a blinded-by-rage Son Hyuk is more than ready to send his rival to hell forever. Too bad Hye In saves his life placing herself right in front of Jung Woo. She looks back where she knows Son Hyuk is, and he’s like what-the-frak-damn-traitor.

Oh, I absolutely loved Son Hyuk’s despair. I think it was actually the first time he expressed something more than a blank stare; there was a deep disbelief in his eyes that lead to a few seconds of awesomeness from him. Now that he’s starting to fail, his spinning out-of-control persona is shining more than the manipulative freak.

Meanwhile, Hye In has to invent an excuse for them to meet, since “I had to kill you but repented” is not going to leave a strong impression on him. So, she simply says that they’re not going to work, not in this line of work. The problem is, his idea wasn’t that of a classic relationship, but something more free and unattached like a strong friendship with some benefits, was that too hard for her?

Hye In, understandably tired of lying, answers with her trade mark deadpan face. Having learned from his past experiences, Jung Woo doesn’t push her to pursue happiness with him, but asks her to find happiness nevertheless – even if she has to do it alone. He offers to wait for her, just a little more, however she’s not interested.

Not even a minute passes after they separate, and she’s already missing him like crazy, crying over their happy memories together.

Ki Soo, worried over Jung Woo’s behavior, calls Sung Chul and slides the code deciphering issue. It shocks me that, apparently, everything that Ki Soo wants is some credit for breaking the code and not something juicier. He seems to be a faithful buddy after all…

At the Blue House, the President is informed of Son Hyuk’s impeding imprisonment. The Secretary guesses that he must be an Athena agent, considering that they’re not just summoning him, but taking him to prison. If that’s the case (Kwon confirms her suspicions), this is a matter of Korean national security and they should handle it, according to the President.

This brief reunion is quite shocking for Director Han, who immediately calls Son Hyuk to convey the news. Oh, we get some more of Son Hyuk’s blood thirsty persona, and it’s his best mask. Alongside Andy (formerly Randy, formerly Sean Richard), they gather all important information, and open their ways shooting whoever stands in their road to freedom.

Oh-My-Gawd. The body count is simply mind-boggling. They’re just two guys against the whole NTS, but they make heads explode with well aimed shots as if they were in some cheap country fair. At last, one of them shoots Son Hyuk in his stomach area, raising a bit their efficiency rank but not so much. Luckily for our Athena boy, Andy picks him up and they escape in a car.

This tragic getaway puts the NTS in red alert – their new top priority is to catch Son Hyuk, who no longer has privileges of any kind and is referred to as a “criminal on the run”. These words have a particular heavy meaning in Jae Hee’s mind; she was starting to develop a soft spot for him when suddenly BAM! He’s a traitor.

(It’s too bad that Lee Ji Ah’s eyes have the same expression as a dead fish’s, because it was her moment to shine, and express through her eyes how conflicted she was after falling for his trap.)

Jung Woo asks for Sung Chul’s help to open the security box.

What’s in there, what’s in there?

*drum rolls*

Nothing flashy, nothing visibly important. Just a pair of glasses, with two thingies attached. Sung Chul tries them on, only to accidentally let one of the thingies drop – they were hiding something more important: chips with North Korean information about their nuclear development.

The NTS releases an alert to hospitals that can handle gunshot wounds, while Hye In rushes to find her boss. Unknown to her, as she leaves the facility, Jung Woo arrives to update his report on Dr. Kim’s secret message. After handing the chips, he takes the regained good concept that Kwon has of him to ask for his reincorporation to the field.

Meanwhile, Andy is improvising medical skills to save Son Hyuk.

The newly found intel on North Korea proves to be a possible game changer in regards to the whole peninsula’s position in the world. The data they had was radically different, but the supposedly real scenario is a fertile ground for other nations to try and bomb the north (according to it, North Korea is more powerful than expected.)

The situation is indeed delicate.

At the mahjong place, Mr. Chang is doing some major mess that led him to almost lose his hand. He has to thank Ki Soo for saving his skin, who in return only wants information about Jung Woo. As per Mr. Chang’s words, they met when he worked in the Private Investigator’s field. They can’t continue their chat due to an unexpected guest.

This guest is the Lieutenant General’s special envoy, warning him of the Lieutenant’s upcoming arrival and mandatory visit to him. Ki Soo is not particularly glad to hear this.

The NTS welcomes Jung Woo after his brief involuntary vacations, with his first assignment being Son Hyuk’s car (which was just found). When he arrives, Jae Hee is already there, aware of the car switch that’ll make it impossible for them to track the traitor. As a cherry on top of this damn situation, the place where they had the replace car has no CCTV or security, so well, good luck trying to find any clues.

Unless… There’s one last resource worth checking.

Jung Woo instructs the NTS guys to collect the black boxes memory chips from all the cars in the building (apparently, every car has one and record whether the car is being driven or not) and turn them to the Lab. Thankfully for them, one caught the car used by Andy and Son Hyuk and it license plate number is quite clear too. The chase is on now.

Jae Hee gets Director Han’s call while skimming through some DIS files, and both of them look gloomy regarding Son Hyuk’s status (he’s still MIA).

Not being able to let it go, Ki Soo keeps on pushing Jung Woo in order to get some extra data on what was in the box. For once, Jung Woo is intelligent enough not to tell him any details and hangs up.

In a hurry, Hye In goes to the baddies’ secret shack where Son Hyuk is nearer to death than ever. Touched by the view of her dear leader agonizing, her eyes get wet while she grabs his hand tightly. Isolated by the headquarters, she’ll have to find way to cure him without reporting the wound.

Wearing a surgical mask, Hye In enters Hangang Hospital looking for some nurse clothes to change into. Her goal is to get a doctor to accompany her to where Son Hyuk is fighting for his life.

Contrary to what Andy thought (that the car she used was safe), some cops at the entrance recognize the license plate number and report it to NTS quarters. The team arrives, but looking for a guy, not the sweet killing machine Hye In, so she slips through their fingers without them even noticing.

However efficient her work seems at first, the truth is that the CCTV system catches her while she’s leading the doctor (at gunpoint) to the medicine supply room. The guys don’t see her face, but Jung Woo orders a fingerprint analysis instead.

At the Blue House, the President is meeting for the first time with Kim Ho Gyun, North Korea’s Army Major-General, who comes alongside Chul Young. Diplomacy is fairly used, only to be undiplomatic, if that makes any sense at all – no one is completely comfortable, and they don’t want their rivals to be at ease either. In conclusion, the atmosphere is as dense as it could be.

The situation is as follows: North Korea is indignant after knowing that not only Dr. Kim was under South Korea’s protection (after denying any connection to his disappearance), but also that said doctor is dead. If all that turned out to be true, their fragile peace could be at risk.

The President is in a risky position, attempting to resolve matters by lightly apologizing for not letting the North Koreans know about Dr. Kim’s work. Ho Gyun can’t help emphasizing the irony that statement brings – since Dr. Kim was their asset from the get-go, they didn’t want to share a South Korean investigation, but to have the rightful ownership over those nuclear discoveries.

Kwon then plays the peace card, saying that if North Korea should’ve kept him, they would’ve used him only in a dangerous nuclear proliferation that would’ve only led to war. The President agrees to what he said, and the meeting concludes with a relationship between both sides that’s far worse than before.

Both North Korean envoys are fuming, although Chul Young is leaning towards a prudent approach. His counterpart, on the contrary, is utterly against the idea of that kind of reaction.

As expected, Ki Soo delivers the secret code to Chul Young – his new mission is to find out what it is asap. If he does what he’s been asked, he could stop beng the faithful buddy I was hoping. However, we can add his name to the long list of conflicted characters around here.

While Hye In is soaking some clothes in acid, the NTS guys have identified the missing doctor car’s location thanks to its Lo Jack and go for it.

Son Hyuk has been cured by the doctor, but his wound needs to be taken care of. Now that his consciousness has returned, Hye In wants to apologize for her weak behavior that led her to disobey his direct order and save Jung Woo instead. Looking at her with puppy eyes, he presents her with the keys to her freedom – no more orders from him, she’ll have to follow her own path (something tells us that he’ll regret this in the future…)

This beautiful moment between two cute little blood-thirsty psychopaths is sadly interrupted by Jung Woo & Co, who after one intense shooting with Andy (he finally gets shot, for Christ’s sake!), are welcome by a surprise.

In the shack, Son Hyuk surrenders to his sudden but inevitable fate. Hye In receives NTS’ message directing her to, well, where she is, in order to help the good guys. At first, she’s against the idea of leaving her tutor, but then, a better idea pops up in her mind.

*dun dun dun*

She’ll be the one responsible for his detention.

Episode 9 synopsis/summary/recap:

Jung Woo screams. Hye In writhes in pain at being electrocuted within a water tank. He cries out that he’ll do it – he’ll steal back the SNC as long as they don’t hurt her anymore. Well that was easy.

It’s funny that the terrorists apologize to Hye In later for hurting her so – it was all for the sake of being believable. Son Hyuk enters for a private moment, and gently asks if she’s OK. He’s clearly so into her, but she responds with blank eyes, unmoved by his concern.

Jung Woo returns to the NTS headquarters in Japan, pissed that he couldn’t save Hye In and is forced to betray his country. But in the end, it’s not that hard – he just goes into the room where it’s being kept and unlocks it from the safe. The room is also under surveillance, and Kwon witnesses Jung Woo’s act of treason through the cameras. Agents rush in, and bring him to Chul Hwan for questioning.

He is aware that Athena has moles within NTS and was warned not to mention of Hye In’s kidnapping. Therefore, he’s unable to explain himself properly to Chul Hwan about why he’s stealing the SNC. Chul Hwan suspends him from his duties and arranges to have him sent back to Seoul.

Jae Hee is smarter; her hunch is that Jung Woo is acting strangely because of Hye In, who oh-so-coincidentally is now unreachable. Something is fishy! Jae Hee wants to let him go, and take the SNC, because he just might lead NTS to the people who kidnapped Dr. Kim. Kwon allows for Jae Hee to take over the case.

She visits Jung Woo in his holding room and starts off with expressing her disappointment in his inability to admit what is going on. Jung Woo keeps mum and Jae Hee begs for him to just talk, or else she will be put in a difficult position. She reaches out to hold his hand in comfort, gets up, and then touches his shoulder. She tells him that Jin Seok is at home and about to leave with the SNC, and then exits.

Jae Hee had palmed a paper clip to Jung Woo. He pretends to go into shock and topples out of his chair, causing guards to rush into his room. He knocks them out and handcuffs them together. He takes out everyone in his way and runs out. And guess who drives up with his getaway car?

KI SOO! WHEE! My bromance is back. Jung Woo is suspicious as to why Ki Soo is in Japan, but he also has no time with men chasing after him. He gets in the backseat and let’s Ki Soo drive him off. Jae Hee follows in pursuit.

Ki Soo and Jung Woo arrive outside Jin Seok’s apartment and split up. Guards rush up to protect Jin Seok, but they’re of no match. Despite having a gun trained on him, Jin Seok refuses to release the briefcase from the handcuffs around his wrist. In less than five moves, Jung Woo disables Jin Seok and unlocks the case. He runs out the balcony, and when cornered, leaps off the balcony, grabs hold of a cable line, descends far enough and jumps into the water. Ki Soo comes up to him in a speedboat, and as Jae Hee watches overhead the two of them speed off. Cute.

Hye In wakes up from a nightmare with Son Hyuk beside her bed. She’s having the same dream of being locked under a deck and how she was always saved – but this time around, no one came for her. (Prophetic? Nah – Jung Woo will come!) Son Hyuk apologizes for having her involved in all this, but she tells him it was her choice. He has nothing to be sorry for.

Pachinko parlor – Ki Soo can’t seem to win as many mini balls as the old man next to him. When the old man asks Ki Soo to watch his winnings as he goes to the restroom, Ki Soo decides to switch machines. While I’m yelling at the computer screen for him to just steal the old man’s winnings, Ki Soo plays again, and the output is very little. The old man returns, sits at Ki Soo’s original machine, and hits the jackpot. I TOLD you to just take the old guy’s winnings! You’re too upright!

Jae Hee and her agents arrive at the parlor. At the same time Ki Soo calls in to report to Chul Young; he’s in Japan and still trying to figure out what is up with NTS’ activities. He finishes up the call before Jung Woo sits beside him. Jung Woo has one request – for Ki Soo to get a rifle. Ki Soo also notices that there’s a tracking pin on Jung Woo’s collar; he takes it and puts it on a random guy while Jung Woo makes his escape.

When the agents report that they’re tracking the wrong person, Jae Hee rushes into the parlor and finds Jung Woo. She threatens to shoot him if he doesn’t cooperate with her, but he walks anyways, knowing she doesn’t have the guts to do it. And she doesn’t.

The other agents spot Ki Soo too late, but now they know who Jung Woo is working with.

Now it’s time to put their plan to action. The meeting spot is at a cemetery. Ki Soo rides up in a motorcycle and sets up his sniper position (putting the eyepiece the wrong way too. Teehee). Jung Woo arrives with the SNC. A minute later two cars drive up, one with the main captor and the other with the hostage, a hood over the face. Jung Woo hands over the SNC, and after it’s been confirmed, the captor gives the signal. One of his guys shoots the hostage execution style, and Ki Soo shoots that man in the head from the distance. Jung Woo and Ki Soo take out as many of the baddies as they can, just as Jae Hee and NTS agents arrive.

Jung Woo is sick with grief as he stands over the dead body. He cradles the body against his own and removes the mask… It’s Kim Myung Guk.

Hye In is watching the scene unfold from a distance. Guess having a flat chest means the guy who loves you can’t tell you apart from a man when the hood is covered.

Dr. Kim grabs Jung Woo and transfers a small crumpled piece of paper into his hands before he dies. Two terrorists manage to still get away but Jung Woo quickly chases after them. They report positively to Son Hyuk, and he orders for their warehouse headquarters to be cleared. Hye In thinks it will be difficult for her to return, so Son Hyuk takes out his gun, shoots two of his men dead, and tells her to use the bodies whichever way she chooses.

Damn. Well that was generous.

Ki Soo and Jung Woo arrive at the warehouse, where Hye In and the head captor are setting up bombs to destroy all evidence. Despite Ki Soo’s warnings of being cautious, Jung Woo prefers to go in guns a-blazin’. He shoots as many down dead as possible, alerting Hye In and the head captor. Jae Hee arrives as backup, and they notice that gas has been released into the air. But no matter, Jung Woo wants to find Hye In!

He yells out her name; Hye In is already out the back door (the head captor with the SNC already gone), and sees Sean Richard waiting for her in the distance. Son Hyuk is watching her from the car. She’s about to join them when she hears Jung Woo – he’s alive! She is absolutely torn that he’s working so hard to find her. The bombs count down and there’s only 20 seconds left.

Hye In makes her decision: she runs back into the warehouse. Son Hyuk looks absolutely morbid as he watches her run off.

With less than fifteen seconds before everything goes KABOOM, Ki Soo forces Jae Hee to get out of the building with him. With less than five seconds, Hye In finds Jung Woo and drags him out the back door, just as the warehouse explodes behind them.

Hye In is knocked out, but OK, and they are reunited with Jae Hee and Ki Soo. But Jung Woo isn’t done – now he has to go after the SNC.

He grabs Ki Soo’s motorbike and chases the terrorists, all of whom are on a motorboat. Jung Woo fires a few choice shots, killing a couple of them and making the motorboat leak gas. He drives the bike up a plank, lets it fly into the boat and causes it to explode. Jung Woo, having landed in the water, swims up to retrieve the SNC case floating in the water.

As NTS and Kwon make their way to the site, Sean Richard drives Son Hyuk away. The two cars pass each other on the road but neither side notices the other.

Jung Woo is a hero! But also a traitor. An internal investigation team arrives at NTS to interrogate Jung Woo, Hye In, and Ki Soo, also confiscating all of their belongings. Kwon orders Chul Hwan to take over matters in NTS – he’s going to step down as director and take responsibility for the recent fiasco.

Jae Hee overhears about this and arranges to meet her father. She asks him for a favor – to find out who is part of the Special Investigations Committee and where they are holding the “prisoners” for questioning. Her father can tell she’s still worried about Jung Woo, but she asks that Jung Woo be let go – he would never betray his country.

During a meeting with the President and all advisors, Jae Hee’s father calls for someone to be held responsible. Kwon steps up and announces his resignation. Of course, the president won’t let him go just like that, so he addresses Kwon privately. If the group behind the recent kidnappings is Athena, then he won’t let Kwon resign. Kwon must help in fighting off corrupt groups and regain his honor. I feel bad for the president – either he’s lax about security (which makes me feel worse for South Korea), or just plain unlucky to be hit with two rogue groups (IRIS and ATHENA) during his presidency.

Because everything has to happen in a warehouse or a big building in the middle of nowhere, the three prisoners are interrogated separately. One is suspicious as to why Dr. Kim was killed in place of Hye In, while Ki Soo tries to avoid getting caught for running a mahjong parlor. Another one grills Jung Woo about choosing to risk national security for the life of a fellow agent, and Hye In’s interrogator makes her feel guilty that Jung Woo would risk so much for her.

Son Hyuk on the other hand is in a really foul mood. Not only did he lose both Dr. Kim and the SNC, but he also lost Hye In. Sean Richard also couldn’t find out where Hye In is being held, so Son Hyuk grabs him by the throat and tells him to do it quickly.

I’m kinda hoping Sean Richard will betray Son Hyuk, based on that bitter glare he gave him. Or, he’s just pissed Son Hyuk isn’t more interested in him…

But he does find out that Jae Hee’s father is in charge of the investigation. Son Hyuk immediately meets up with him – in a garage no less – and slaps him hard right across the face. He asks why Han Jeong Pil didn’t bother to report to him about the investigation.

Wait whut? Han Jeong Pil…works for Athena?!

Son Hyuk wants Hye In released immediately. No reason given. He doesn’t care whether it’ll be easy or not, he just wants Director Han to do it. Son Hyuk: “If you keep on disappointing me, things will get more difficult for you.”

With no choice, Director Han orders a halt on investigations on Ki Soo and Hye In. But for Jung Woo, he’s still stuck inside.

The moment Ki Soo’s out, he calls up Chul Young. He’s got information to share.
